The clouds appeared like this only for a few seconds so it was a little frantic trying to capture something of how the sky was at that moment. Not that I wanted to create a moment in time, it's that when you refer to nature it gives the work a kind of conviction by incorporating fantasy with reality. The painting I ended up with was mostly imagined. It's not a particular place and my aim was to make the sky the most dominant aspect of the painting with a landscape as small as possible but not so small that it disappears from the image. One of the characteristics I like about this work is the abstract quality, expressed through a kind of minimalism. But as always, it's the presence of light and air that I aim to create more so than anything else.</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 238);"><u><br /></u></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-19718253160829108112024-01-25T18:26:00.000-08:002024-01-25T18:43:53.082-08:00Art and the Occult<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgJxBwq7GW5b0GkJG0ET5hAqmajpY3t0XyobGWtdY1TK5bKmrNWx-FVFbyPFzCYq2KINEC7ZFrhOlY-lXaKHSSg4gYmu7PpQSO4TuD50x8DXiC9XlODiMbkVffa_3mn3PLFTBjUmQ64nwEMGyiY2BY3wR2KaSdaOq9fQ6Q4cGwiiYIQM03GLSQ0Dv2L9m8" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2299" data-original-width="1771" height="768" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgJxBwq7GW5b0GkJG0ET5hAqmajpY3t0XyobGWtdY1TK5bKmrNWx-FVFbyPFzCYq2KINEC7ZFrhOlY-lXaKHSSg4gYmu7PpQSO4TuD50x8DXiC9XlODiMbkVffa_3mn3PLFTBjUmQ64nwEMGyiY2BY3wR2KaSdaOq9fQ6Q4cGwiiYIQM03GLSQ0Dv2L9m8=w592-h768" width="592" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p>This is a fantastic book about the meaning of Art. We've all heard it said many times that no-one knows what art is and therefore it cannot be defined but <i>Art and the Occult</i> considers the qualities that are inherent in great art. For Schwartz the spiritual/occult presence within art is what causes it to be of lasting value, mainly because those same qualities are within human beings. <p></p><p>I was particularly interested in his discussion about El Greco, Goya, Rembrandt and Ingres. For Schwartz, El Greco reigns supreme because his work is pure spirit in contrast to Goya and Rembrandt whose work is almost on that level but not quite. His 'grading' of Ingres to a much lower level is because he painted primarily the physical body and although it's a living body, the body is the main focus of the work rather than the spirit that animates it. </p><p>He also discusses the Tarrot and other mystical practices but these don't interest me at all. His emphasis is on Art and how artists shaped the history of Art because of their ability to express the spiritual light- energy that animates the world we live in. </p><p>It's an absorbing discussion, whether you agree with Schwartz or not, but much of what he writes makes sense and the way he locates the spiritual behind the medium in art is a very interesting read.</p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-35080560098180237672024-01-23T13:37:00.000-08:002024-01-23T13:37:25.842-08:00Thunderclap<p><br /> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhaSriGUNqyohfi2SqKl64sHugN-csp2Pqh7U-wPIqXgC8c-jo6RAfCuhd2mbwwhljpQyu9wqRMSksJRALub2buMf1ZEINDS_fP38Uw7GVmCHqmApQ7i3G97_Ep5Cei1ZeEsUGRIHPbz_bnJeQE4TBVmh4kWfOwmDxE6GunRXwiPxk98df1h9aYNB4dyUU" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2229" data-original-width="1595" height="761" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhaSriGUNqyohfi2SqKl64sHugN-csp2Pqh7U-wPIqXgC8c-jo6RAfCuhd2mbwwhljpQyu9wqRMSksJRALub2buMf1ZEINDS_fP38Uw7GVmCHqmApQ7i3G97_Ep5Cei1ZeEsUGRIHPbz_bnJeQE4TBVmh4kWfOwmDxE6GunRXwiPxk98df1h9aYNB4dyUU=w545-h761" width="545" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of the best books on art I've ever read! The title is a reference to the Delft munitions explosion in 1654 that wiped out a significant portion of Delft. One of the victims of the explosion was the artist Carel Fabrituis, the painter of the famous Goldfinch that is hanging in the Maurithuis in the Hague.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The author of the book, Laura Cumming, not only looks at the art of Fabrituis but other artists' works of that time too and offers snippets into their difficult lives as painters. Her Father and Mother were artists so she grew up in a cultured environment and her writing skills and appreciation of art lead her to the position of art critic for <i>The Observer</i>. But environment doesn't automatically mean art appreciation is a given and it's her innate insights into the paintings she discusses that lights up the text.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I hope she writes another book about those times as it's one of my favourite periods in Art history. </div><p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-37825698005075691342024-01-14T22:21:00.000-08:002024-01-14T22:42:16.126-08:00Self Portrait in a Black Shirt<p><br /> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgjaqe459x-SB26dq_uwEQxJy1kzrkZFxuNvcQidrlONo1fWXwvbamVzpmuSS5QJuRLY7jkxM4Gc2iEg2Y0MnBKsCvFKlEw9o1zkaja6Q9GDbyrjXWihfGMHFEQ-ybejYkt0iEzZdV8vrA6AX5crA4UuVhxOvUG4P8ExXs1AGN--SVwAvvu8LD_j6jBO5Y" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4219" data-original-width="3336" height="741" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgjaqe459x-SB26dq_uwEQxJy1kzrkZFxuNvcQidrlONo1fWXwvbamVzpmuSS5QJuRLY7jkxM4Gc2iEg2Y0MnBKsCvFKlEw9o1zkaja6Q9GDbyrjXWihfGMHFEQ-ybejYkt0iEzZdV8vrA6AX5crA4UuVhxOvUG4P8ExXs1AGN--SVwAvvu8LD_j6jBO5Y=w586-h741" width="586" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Self Portrait in a Black Shirt</i>, 2024, oil on canvas, 51 x 40.75 cm</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is my latest self portrait which was painted over a number of sittings throughout 2023 and completed early this year. I think it's finished but so often I've got my paintings documented as finished paintings and then I fiddle with them a little more and have to get them photographed again. This portrait was documented a second time because the background was a little too blank and appeared to be static so I added more subtle coloured greenish tones. Hopefully the background has a sufficient, but still subtle, variation to make it interesting and not distract from the face. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of the trickiest things about portrait painting is that the human face is not symmetrical so to create a balanced face from asymmetrical parts is a difficult problem. Not many people give this much thought, and why should they anyway, but people are often surprised to learn that one eye is higher than the other. One eyebrow is higher than the other. One eye is more rounded than the other eye which is more egg shaped. One nostril is higher than the other, one side of the mouth is higher than the other. One side of the mouth is wider than the other. One side of the face is wider than the other, and etc. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The fashion industry knows this truth but it thinks symmetry is the more beautiful, so fashion photographers slice a face vertically and then copy and paste one side as a mirror image of itself to create a perfectly symmetrical human being. Sounds just like the salon painters of the later part of the 19th Century who thought the ideal more beautiful than reality!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-80761235354333508112024-01-02T16:15:00.000-08:002024-01-02T16:26:15.574-08:00Animals in My Art<p>When I was much younger I always drew horses, mainly racehorses, so perhaps it makes sense that I occasionally paint other animals. One of my favourite paintings of animals is Carel Fabrituis' <i>The Goldfinch (</i>below) which inspired my canary images. As the paintings show, I felt inclined at the time to do a variation on the same animal. Sometimes, one just isn't enough. </p><p>One of the challenges in painting animals is to give them a personality since all animals have their own individuality, which is especially obvious if you have a pet or spend some time around an animal. </p><p>All the paintings were done from actual specimens except the horse, which is based on a photograph. The drypoint was done from the top painting 6 years later.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhlajDWVUtT8w8AOYOcxRvOHQ6Bp94sEsKfWc-T_xMnIffcTsRMxDbZFNOB7pZ7nrHPJErfx2Dqpl5ehGmjZ3zrvoq4znAlft0-1lLMiQEuQciM6Ptg0VzXoQGLuFS6LIuYCDi-Jjcky_WzwFwNkS8wM9e-IDW4E632j6SAIX0mOn6lLvvM-1YT_2ythCI" style="margin-left: 1em; Collections could inhabit a room but also be confined to a cabinet, which lead to its other name as a C<b>abinet of Curiosities</b>. Wunderkammers were established by people of rank to showcase their place in society or others created by scholars and scientists for study. An entertainment aspect could be present as some of the specimens were not seen by most people and therefore a specimen could have an exotic value because of its rarity. In all cases, the emphasis was on the object itself as deserving of study and appreciation.</p><p>My Wunderkammer? work probes something different. We have all heard about the spiritual behind created things, but perceiving the spiritual and observing the material demand different types of vision. As Christ told us, the kingdom of God will not be known through observation, which means there must be another faculty within us to perceive the spiritual behind things. William Blake tells us that there is no such thing as separate body and soul, but rather that they are the same thing. Spinoza tells us that the body and soul are the same thing expressed in two different ways.</p><p>This work is a response to the material/spiritual presence we always experience. The question mark of the title is there to question the world of appearances and the colour white was used as an attempt to create a ghost/spiritual object but still be one with its material reality by the thickness of the paint. In this way, two kinds of reality exist at the same time. That is my aim!</p><p>The pics below show the <b>Wunderkammer?</b> installation consisting of small paintings and balsa wood models painted with artist's oil prime. I adopted a different palette from what I usually use so for these paintings I used Flake White, Ivory Black, Vermillion and Yellow Ochre. Usually, my choice of colours is white with the three cool primary colours and three warm primary colours - Flake White, Winsor Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Cadmuim Red Deep, French Ultramarine Deep and Cobalt Blue. </p><p> <b></b></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; The first one I did was close to what the scene looked like, but as I was painting it, I had a number of ideas for other paintings. I imagined a fire across the horizon, a lightning strike at night, the wind sweeping across long dry grass or a line of trees beyond the horizon. Of course, these ideas were not be painted from life because the scenes did not exist but even if they did, it would be impossible to paint lightning from life as it cracks across the sky for only a split second and painting a bush fire close up would not happen. Having said that, the painting with the fire on the horizon, the wind pushing the clouds and grass, and the tops of trees beyond the horizon were all painted at the same spot I did the first en plain air picture. Although I was not painting what was in front of me, returning to the spot seems to keep ideas fresh in my mind. All the other paintings were done in the studio from my imagination, although it was a hill that inspired all of these works.</p><p><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjqx94VKbk-en8TkjSxjMm8QJ9U17g6IXSsQ0YbXa7A5ISkzxLstIP1txvOmFTzc5PEEHlHUjTm121PIE9cLn7t-pb0066Js7kcei1QpvW2gRwd3s7IkvWIJBdjIieZuCc6-FAjkSCssFiyWn5BX5N18iAwfdVKjbgH6Ul8BlL1c55u_EuhE77SLgnsv84" style="margin-left: 1em; The hill and clouds were painted first but I wanted a line of trees appearing above and beyond the hill's edge. Since there were no trees there I looked around for a set of trees that would suit the idea I had in mind. My concern was not really the trees, hills and clouds, but the possibility of taking the viewer's gaze into an unknown place. Like something that is an existential journey.</p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-18737940043794921372023-11-20T15:01:00.000-08:002023-11-20T15:01:45.271-08:00Self Portraits<p>I've always loved the art of self portraiture. It can provide an opportunity to paint a human figure or be the means to experiment with ideas. I've occasionally used myself as the model in a painting but rarely as a straight forward image. By this I mean that my face or body is presented in an indirect way to express something other than what I look like. This <b>'something other' </b>can be explained as who are, we? or what are we made of? Most of the images can be located in reality but sometimes a surrealist element does enter the work. </p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEidy1HuHh7yJiLGpTjEN6L804eSTqXBQI_r3uCyuzN49abFfNPLtsUhhDUoqfiVl1Q4874v4A0r47grD-dTRlNn0rUcBqnNnHxmT3A5StH7sdM5typBpqBDFn_LawgSXxm7ZgCmUNqk0pF1CeShBlXpydwZWwEXOIMCejGs0PWC_3Ep59L8igaYKz_aTV4" style="margin-left: 1em; text-align: left;">The top painting was done en plain air. I liked the vast expanse of sky which gave the scene a bright and austere look. On viewing it over time and wondered if I should have added more clouds, so instead, I did another version in the studio. In the studio version I added a few more poles for the sake of the composition because as always, the composition takes precedence over what is in front of you.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If I did not say so, I'm not sure if you could tell which painting was created indoors or in the open air. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0kOhvdO16PGmUWk0_T4Sc9Im5HU2W8cbY6mpSb1Ki5rAMoUWcZEs2tJBNqtpF62smO1TGb_mLiJ5J_vEomNc9DalSJQIT5UR-_JM9lNPdP5zukY7Hgnj_C9v0aULlguJCmNAfraUOKMSGRVxJ1WaYQ8Do4DG8raovloljinr9yGx7z08k_bLrzFXNGp0" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2992" data-original-width="4188" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0kOhvdO16PGmUWk0_T4Sc9Im5HU2W8cbY6mpSb1Ki5rAMoUWcZEs2tJBNqtpF62smO1TGb_mLiJ5J_vEomNc9DalSJQIT5UR-_JM9lNPdP5zukY7Hgnj_C9v0aULlguJCmNAfraUOKMSGRVxJ1WaYQ8Do4DG8raovloljinr9yGx7z08k_bLrzFXNGp0=w589-h422" width="589" /></a></div>Sea Air, 2023, oil on panel, 22.75 x 32 cm<br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjj5PiKFz3UGJsa_gvnQ8tKz_jVflazgX77yLQwTGlFkwInU0I3h_jAnpUpZpQYz1Ajpb9GyuC9E0R6oy_GrNtJI8B5V8RXvpx7lyIAvHLpaLNG6l6MruIL6-lzaW6QIDCGe37KG9O5UvOxTJ5G5VfBUzcjzm2C3D4TlnOE_9tzawqiukJKjy0Kdyjry88" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3184" data-original-width="4045" height="474" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjj5PiKFz3UGJsa_gvnQ8tKz_jVflazgX77yLQwTGlFkwInU0I3h_jAnpUpZpQYz1Ajpb9GyuC9E0R6oy_GrNtJI8B5V8RXvpx7lyIAvHLpaLNG6l6MruIL6-lzaW6QIDCGe37KG9O5UvOxTJ5G5VfBUzcjzm2C3D4TlnOE_9tzawqiukJKjy0Kdyjry88=w602-h474" width="602" /></a></div><span style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center;">Blue Depths, Summer, 2023, oil on linen, 28 x 36 cm</div></span> <p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-20966795147262434792023-10-02T15:39:00.000-07:002023-10-02T15:39:37.240-07:00Trees by the Lake<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi29gbcC8vyjBM0zVraQzqA2a-T3awiUN4e530z4Tu5OtMyXqPkFatPYg_Him_mMJkCYzPTgEkbdMI1zV1cp-d_01sPWmmNuHI7qX9Cc_YWx-tfZf9o_siZLuz1V0G_WOKIOMHtQ3DS0Bshx3MnuU67ujeqt9Cl5l6cXmrQWRQs98JouJNkP4o84TcVEGE" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3147" data-original-width="3155" height="564" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi29gbcC8vyjBM0zVraQzqA2a-T3awiUN4e530z4Tu5OtMyXqPkFatPYg_Him_mMJkCYzPTgEkbdMI1zV1cp-d_01sPWmmNuHI7qX9Cc_YWx-tfZf9o_siZLuz1V0G_WOKIOMHtQ3DS0Bshx3MnuU67ujeqt9Cl5l6cXmrQWRQs98JouJNkP4o84TcVEGE=w566-h564" width="566" /></a></div><i><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Trees by the Lake</i>, 2023, oil on canvas, 61.5 x 61.5 cm</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></i>This another en plain air picture, painted from the outskirts of Ballarat. Winter can be a cold and bleak time of year but it can also offer us some beautiful and subtle colours. When I saw this from the car I was immediately struck by the deep green grass contrasted against the grey and brown hues of the background. As is always the case, the scene wasn't quite like the image I painted. I added the puddle in the foreground, shifted some trees around and played with the proportions of what I saw. <p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-26601152907067905152023-09-20T16:12:00.012-07:002023-09-20T16:15:04.807-07:00Lorenzo<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEih0C7OIPL2QNJtJtYpnGwWcY05Uq1fOMfZOTZna3i-lJhtbWWOoJNz2P95rGaebMsxYw_IXpxWihV8XxrSan5wHuGe-IMvqce-vu1wx5aZIYaCWbUvtrRFc6uTKNeawd5gtD_TukB3bFlNC_L8egHcLBwHmfPQATnOpTK7wTElQnU86Cr7ujQyRm4Fnnw" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4404" data-original-width="2954" height="751" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEih0C7OIPL2QNJtJtYpnGwWcY05Uq1fOMfZOTZna3i-lJhtbWWOoJNz2P95rGaebMsxYw_IXpxWihV8XxrSan5wHuGe-IMvqce-vu1wx5aZIYaCWbUvtrRFc6uTKNeawd5gtD_TukB3bFlNC_L8egHcLBwHmfPQATnOpTK7wTElQnU86Cr7ujQyRm4Fnnw=w504-h751" width="504" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Lorenzo</i>, 2023, oil on panel</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEii4irQG5uErxnLraMRtySLtzhs4x-8wyfzY7n8vkVbVhOZXiAJ_v12hMtLAXmf5CoJJ4udLmNznm6kqTuh21njvr7MVqGoU-CHpWodifFC6QqXkBt5XD2thC4E9AEU-kzILhDuwWPrK0tcxi11YHyWu8zmRfPv9lqrDNvH-NpBAxyL8DnkMV0E3tWscTA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2016" data-original-width="1512" height="689" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEii4irQG5uErxnLraMRtySLtzhs4x-8wyfzY7n8vkVbVhOZXiAJ_v12hMtLAXmf5CoJJ4udLmNznm6kqTuh21njvr7MVqGoU-CHpWodifFC6QqXkBt5XD2thC4E9AEU-kzILhDuwWPrK0tcxi11YHyWu8zmRfPv9lqrDNvH-NpBAxyL8DnkMV0E3tWscTA=w517-h689" width="517" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">This painting is a 1st birthday present for Lorenzo Jones. She has a unique ability to impersonate great singers of the past and present, both in their songs and in their everyday speech. She weaves instances of a singers's life around their songs and she does this with poignancy and humour. But the main reason she succeeds is that she's just as talented as the singers she impersonates. Her high notes are electric and the feeling she puts into her music is something only a singer who can act the song can achieve.</p><p>I've seen her perform on a few occasions and she has never disappointed. Her latest performance in the Fairfax studio at the Melbourne Arts Centre embraced the personas of Maria Callas, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, Amy Whitehouse, Barbara Streisand, Kate Bush, Shirley Bassey, Miley Cyrus, Karen Carpenter and Dolly Parton.</p><p>I can't wait to see her perform again.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-79487599095438236712023-09-02T18:44:00.005-07:002023-09-02T18:44:57.313-07:00Interiors<p>Paintings of interiors have always fascinated me. They seem to be about something else rather than a picture of a room. The ones I like best are rooms that seem to invite a state of meditation or reflection, that bring you into a calm centre.</p><p>The painting I did of my front bedroom was inspired by the sunlight streaming through the semi- transparent curtains. The curtains seemed to be as ethereal as the light itself.</p><p>Two of my favourite artists are Gwen John and Vilhelm Hammershoi. One is where, through drawing, an artist creates a body and its idea at the same time, a process that follows the laws of nature and the other is when objects and images are assembled and manipulated from images and materials that already exist. It’s like comparing Dr. Frankenstein to nature. Frankenstein assembled a man but nature created the parts he used. Without nature he would have nothing to assemble. Without a draughtsperson, an assembler has nothing to piece together or manipulate.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">Why drawing is important can be explained by what drawing does. Without dimension one can only see a flat pattern, but when light and air enter the process of drawing, which is what dimension is, flat patterns are changed into forms. It’s almost a contradiction to say that the more we’re aware of invisible space and light, the more presence the visible has.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">Sometimes there can be confusion between the process of drawing and drawings themselves. Drawings are often defined as works created with pencils, crayons, pastels or any medium that isn’t paint. When paint is the medium, then the words ‘paintings’ and ‘drawings’ are used to separate them from each other. But placing marks within the light and air of a picture is what drawing does, it doesn’t matter what medium is used. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">In art, there often seems to be a misconception that content or subject matter is the art. But this is not true. The meaning in subject matter is what we talk about but sometimes the words seem to be more important than the images. Words are used to avoid drawing by bringing excess attention to the subject matter. Content can be important, but if an idea is not brought to life through drawing, then what is its value as art? It then does not transcend its verbosity.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">Drawing is not a skill or a mechanical process. It reflects stillness as well as mechanical motion and it has a quality that is transcendental as well as observational. There are endless combinations of colours and shapes in drawn images but the light and air within these images remains the same. The observational aspect of drawing is these shapes and colours, the transcendental aspect is the air and light. Cezanne put this way, ‘If I were called upon to define briefly the word Art, I should call it the reproduction of what the senses perceive in nature, seen through the veil of the soul’.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">These transcendental qualities in the art of drawing are not understood by technology because machines have no inner life and therefore cannot bring to life to the things and images they manufacture. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">It’s enlightening to read more quotes from some great artists and philosophers on the nature of the inner light and air within the image, and within ourselves.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">MATISSE</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> - Colour helps to express light, not the physical phenomenon, but the only light that truly exists, what’s in the artist’s brain.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><b><span style="font-size: 14pt;">PICASSO – </span></b><span style="font-size: 14pt;">There are artists who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.<b><o:p></o:p></b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><b><span style="font-size: 14pt;">MANET – </span></b><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The principal personage in a painting is light<b><o:p></o:p></b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><b><span style="font-size: 14pt;">WIM WENDERS – </span></b><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Wim Wenders is a film maker and he has been inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper. When artists separate themselves from the creation of their work, a quality that should be there no longer is there. Bringing an idea into the world through oneself is not the same thing as leaving your idea to a machine to manufacture. Our art galleries and museums have become spaces to display images and things that are designed and manufactured. The light source comes from an extension cord and its electrical socket rather than a light source from within the artist. The air within the work is no longer there because machines have no breath to extend into the images and things they manufacture. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">There are people who say contemporary art means we no longer need to draw but what they don’t seem to realise is that they are completely reliant on those who CAN draw. The contemporary art practice where an artist sources and manipulates another artist’s work and re-presents it as their own derives from a source of images created by draughtspersons. Our world is full of technology but what is often forgotten is that the existence of all machinery can be traced back to a drawing.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">The culture of manufactured art has now lead to AI being given permission to gather images from a data base and present it as art. If artists are content to source other artist’s work then the next logical step is to allow AI to do it for them.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;">Technology has given us the large spectacle, the sensory immersive experience, reproductions of other artist’s work and manufactured images and things to fill our galleries and museums. It would be disastrous if we entered an age where drawing no longer existed. Our only access to images would then be through a data base where once human beings COULD draw. What a loss of soul that would be.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri; He played solo for quite awhile before any of the dancers appeared on stage and when they did it was electric. The passion and precision of Flamenco guitar and dance is like a fire that keeps burning! As the pic shows, they received a standing ovation and the smiles on the performer's faces said it all. They even clapped the audience. There was another guitarist who accompanied Paco, a drummer and a singer but it was impossible to find out who they were. <p></p><p>Paco Pana is 81 years old now, but he still has that magic when he plays. He takes you to another world and it's a shame we have to leave it. I'm sure many Melburnians are eagerly awaiting his return to the Melbourne Recital Centre.</p><p>Photo credit - Paul Compton.</p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-72284345762187455512023-07-21T22:48:00.008-07:002023-07-21T22:49:01.096-07:00Light and the Cinema<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgE_7UYz0flulCy_BYfR9r4UEd9Eel071fTUlaTDOD3V9Z7AvrtYe2nlUnzmA1lY7ofnxCsdkTaNISu41iPk6hw3A-dZkd0zyzjyg0IbFY_7Gs5mkBNF1GQvzACW2DiIZPYkTJhoG7u1EsAr3NbVh8SHh2z-HhbaO2tejbENiFdgaGnyhAxR7pO-kxqTXg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3317" data-original-width="4088" height="473" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgE_7UYz0flulCy_BYfR9r4UEd9Eel071fTUlaTDOD3V9Z7AvrtYe2nlUnzmA1lY7ofnxCsdkTaNISu41iPk6hw3A-dZkd0zyzjyg0IbFY_7Gs5mkBNF1GQvzACW2DiIZPYkTJhoG7u1EsAr3NbVh8SHh2z-HhbaO2tejbENiFdgaGnyhAxR7pO-kxqTXg=w581-h473" width="581" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Light and the Cinema, 2023, oil on canvas, 61.25 x 76.25 cm</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">'Light is the principal personage of a picture', This quote by Manet has such significance because for me, light and air are mostly what turns painting techniques and subject matter into art. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">My current work has light as its subject matter. Although light needs to be there to bring a picture to life, many paintings also emphasise a story as well. But my aim is to paint something that needs no words/story since light has a universal meaning and is enough on its own to be the subject matter of the picture. The important thing to be aware of also is that light comes from the artist and not the sun, the moon, colours or the electricity grid. As Matisse put it, 'Colour helps to express light, not the physical phenomenon, but the only light that truly exists, what's in the artist's brain'.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The cinema is projected light, which makes it a perfect motif for a picture emphasising light. The image on the screen in the above painting is not that important and it doesn't really contribute to the subject matter but light brings it to the screen.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">There is a quote by Wim Wenders that says so much - </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">'The only subject is the light as an existential condition of man. They are constantly changing so the general rhythms and colours on the water are the best way to express them. I could have just taken a photograph and painted from that, but somehow, not using a camera is like an invitation and a challenge to come up with something that a camera can't capture. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In this painting, I added more trees than there are in the scene. When I started to paint, I realised that most of the dark reflections were made by taller trees in the background but I didn't want them in the picture as there would have been too many of them, so to get a lot of darkness in the water, I extended the reflections of the five trees to suit the composition. The painting below was also done at the same spot so the actual view shows the deviation a composition can inspire compared to what is there.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj8Gn17f8818VrDblhux1KicFoL_cm85qhBo9CS70d1b8va4kVyTaYNq2lX-BZh5skQHdrxBDTe2i34-41NBn-e8M7Ny2pZ1SKattnkBv7yUnerhHl4XSwM3kShrHY7pG-mnkQ9xOwl0lRvoRbZFBYBAiJK-6M-3t1lgLxFOjnN_JGuOJwZoX8BxQAf6Ss" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3123" data-original-width="3127" height="574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj8Gn17f8818VrDblhux1KicFoL_cm85qhBo9CS70d1b8va4kVyTaYNq2lX-BZh5skQHdrxBDTe2i34-41NBn-e8M7Ny2pZ1SKattnkBv7yUnerhHl4XSwM3kShrHY7pG-mnkQ9xOwl0lRvoRbZFBYBAiJK-6M-3t1lgLxFOjnN_JGuOJwZoX8BxQAf6Ss=w574-h574" width="574" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">The Quiet of Winter, 2021, oil on canvas, 66.5 x 66.5 cm.</div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgSgnSIhKD2WDAkEQ0YqSY0Y9FqDo6sjhaxvHXPD5zhDXsku8E2WoC5UUv8FEMvgD29VB57mu7Q7sPYEvo-5gky-ggTCgUZ2BW6e4xR2UCauknPQ20rkm7q9NxHpLOywJMS9ySH2t5v0NFDkOpjItlIDahj3a9BWMxVmUqA_wLBrzsjONqihzfNEhdm_KM" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="433" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgSgnSIhKD2WDAkEQ0YqSY0Y9FqDo6sjhaxvHXPD5zhDXsku8E2WoC5UUv8FEMvgD29VB57mu7Q7sPYEvo-5gky-ggTCgUZ2BW6e4xR2UCauknPQ20rkm7q9NxHpLOywJMS9ySH2t5v0NFDkOpjItlIDahj3a9BWMxVmUqA_wLBrzsjONqihzfNEhdm_KM=w576-h433" width="576" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">The actual view where these two paintings were based on.</div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I've always loved Vermeer's painting of Delft and those reflections on the water. Every time I drive around Lake Wendouree and see trees reflected in the dark water on a grey day, it reminds me of the Vermeer painting. You can see the simplification Vermeer adopted to render the water. His picture was at the back of my mind when I painted Reflections, Silver and Green.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiHOnvkPTmw8EXjjQ_kmt4EMI5qVDmuqgHEcvl2ANoxDI3KRoFe2gWUbaz5G2gdCgYyDr0iSyasL1WkW244gFvadV9JQCRt5tmSaWgntBIKD5jtRGsfLW12T_vDR5keAOA1bPaOCx8p5wDqyhZlixc1tVAzAS2VZpfPlKun-JLj4eBKKYUp4XkmbpnMytY" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2491" data-original-width="3000" height="486" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiHOnvkPTmw8EXjjQ_kmt4EMI5qVDmuqgHEcvl2ANoxDI3KRoFe2gWUbaz5G2gdCgYyDr0iSyasL1WkW244gFvadV9JQCRt5tmSaWgntBIKD5jtRGsfLW12T_vDR5keAOA1bPaOCx8p5wDqyhZlixc1tVAzAS2VZpfPlKun-JLj4eBKKYUp4XkmbpnMytY=w584-h486" width="584" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">View of Delft, 1659-1661, oil on canvas, 98 x 1180 cm.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjalBF6PUem5xW-iQfOHTFNpRLtXxLxTT8CuKvL6mUV7Ax0nZeF4r__oWh4xSTzc-l9Qj2WGexuMiFm-vp-dB1X7Wv1Ub_GLw57Cy6LFP5bAclyRVBsxUxKNtKZ70eMHPSQngST9re5QV0Dk_QBbmDz2B0N0X67w4M1Cx307DBjSeujCKir0Uu0iGMOvSA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="594" data-original-width="1040" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjalBF6PUem5xW-iQfOHTFNpRLtXxLxTT8CuKvL6mUV7Ax0nZeF4r__oWh4xSTzc-l9Qj2WGexuMiFm-vp-dB1X7Wv1Ub_GLw57Cy6LFP5bAclyRVBsxUxKNtKZ70eMHPSQngST9re5QV0Dk_QBbmDz2B0N0X67w4M1Cx307DBjSeujCKir0Uu0iGMOvSA=w595-h340" width="595" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><br /><br /><br /></div> <p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-33856641435179252072023-07-09T22:44:00.005-07:002023-07-09T22:44:51.773-07:00Blue Haze, Summer.<p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhg2_4InkIKWGwXVjJTcqUGcp3iiPIe3R1wqbqThlcZTRIDjsQho9Hk-4gB2im9t_rFc6ItE5aOpsjjUwVBfiwZQqy9uoL2PlYefxJLxjRMFomSABKTQaiBnv6bJxiN494V3upI7vr_W2jcB0I_D7ELO4_vITeUQ-qL3-YGBhR4-XcYzWfZYY_tTLvEZ1U" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3210" data-original-width="4635" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhg2_4InkIKWGwXVjJTcqUGcp3iiPIe3R1wqbqThlcZTRIDjsQho9Hk-4gB2im9t_rFc6ItE5aOpsjjUwVBfiwZQqy9uoL2PlYefxJLxjRMFomSABKTQaiBnv6bJxiN494V3upI7vr_W2jcB0I_D7ELO4_vITeUQ-qL3-YGBhR4-XcYzWfZYY_tTLvEZ1U=w590-h410" width="590" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Blue Haze, Summer, 2023, oil on canvas, 46.25 x 66.5 cm</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">One of the most striking characteristics of nature is the subtlety of its colours. The original series consisted of 100 small paintings measuring 13.5 x 20.25 cm each. John Constable's small cloud studies were an early influence and inspiration and perhaps years later when I did these paintings it was unconsciously an homage to his achievements.</p><p>As is often the case when an art work is multi-panelled, no-one wants to buy the whole set. Some have sold so the series is smaller than it should be. Also, the space available is a factor in how multi-panelled art works are displayed, so in this case I have been limited to installing 27 cloud paintings which completes the amount of art we can hang in our bedroom. </p><p>Needless to say, I was always a little nervous during the hanging of the works because as you can see, the critic and art connoisseur, Alice our cultured cat, sees things in black and white. It's either purrfect or it isn't!!</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: red; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgakAd9rKXBxDGzDTGNWFiunEq0RIrp9mA55h0EKp42ICEre2qFpn33HgdE5htDZ4MKYJHmoBj8z2tKvrU4ZYvompv9EQFOShjLNqiYWDcwTfHuoVbFh951jzsIUy-xu7VNDPABTy5enWdHLTAuhs-tWKVHw7UH4G4Geh0weP6cQ7iTb7o_vUCglScj" style="margin-left: 1em; I thought Daniel played it to perfection and it was such an honour to be a part of this concert. Most of the compositions were by Daniel's students, so it was a program of mostly new works. Although hearing famous pieces is a wonderful experience, it can make one wonder how many versions of famous pieces do we need, so new music always refreshes the repertoire.</p><p>The program and the composers are as follows - </p><p>'Nocturne No.2. op.9' by Frederic Chopin</p><p>'A dozen and one Christian Dispositions' (Volume 1) by Clinton Ruyg</p><p>i. The Cheerful Giver</p><p>ii. The Pilgrim</p><p>iii. Martha</p><p>iv. The Sinful Woman</p><p>'Echoes' by Tom Chalko</p><p>'Melancholy Fugue' by George Jenner</p><p>'Midnight Swing' by Jamal Shamas</p><p>'Mazurka fur Mutti' by Rachel Badlan</p><p>'Surprise Sonata' by Ilay Kenes</p><p>'Winter' by Shane Jones</p><p>'Hear my Prayer' by Khiem Nguyen-Day</p><p>'Irish Tune from County Derry' are. Malcolm Perris (based on the version by Percy Grainger)</p><p>'Wind Before The Rain' by Trisha Budd</p><p>'Mazurka in D Minor' by Brittany Lum</p><p>'Light Moves' by Rick Alexander - Dawn</p><p>'Fleeting Shadows' by Colleen Billington</p><p>'Chant du Matin' by Robin Teese</p><p>'El Ultimo Aliento' byAlejandro Meija Sanchez</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiW0CYrUtr3KFpvUDNY1BDYXnoUTMj8UMoUeTmPPaLFZhamhxK29Q4OJMw43eXC033ipNnRL76c3B2t49as8u3_4aggyN6Wyx5J1tQ-8UjFa3lIpt4Ife5mqdL9ppLEQXz_09eFCOTb2D9miKtTftyWqYEZjm-LMGWlluc2ORIRclZqcnvGKHsWiXdX" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3009" data-original-width="3009" height="555" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiW0CYrUtr3KFpvUDNY1BDYXnoUTMj8UMoUeTmPPaLFZhamhxK29Q4OJMw43eXC033ipNnRL76c3B2t49as8u3_4aggyN6Wyx5J1tQ-8UjFa3lIpt4Ife5mqdL9ppLEQXz_09eFCOTb2D9miKtTftyWqYEZjm-LMGWlluc2ORIRclZqcnvGKHsWiXdX=w555-h555" width="555" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">The beautiful St. Stephen's Church</div><p></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg3XUrocCcLaJsSBGLzD0ojJp9od3U1oI1UjCPjeJ2AdAyfApigVPKfSM0ZUfchW4fYDC5w6ccrtVaipectv9mFAFqdAdCk-x4_Q-LAa3v5SPlWYjfkpgeGOIjvAGvIrmcw-bGXErFCQ_rVGZmW7aWTvcfvFHpwa5-YXJ7WEVbFpqv6vslaz_K4JiTv" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3359" data-original-width="2918" height="648" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg3XUrocCcLaJsSBGLzD0ojJp9od3U1oI1UjCPjeJ2AdAyfApigVPKfSM0ZUfchW4fYDC5w6ccrtVaipectv9mFAFqdAdCk-x4_Q-LAa3v5SPlWYjfkpgeGOIjvAGvIrmcw-bGXErFCQ_rVGZmW7aWTvcfvFHpwa5-YXJ7WEVbFpqv6vslaz_K4JiTv=w560-h648" width="560" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Daniel completely absorbed in the music</div><p></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhtXDhWOi9EuWfAksKGe7jgMCtsKSjpkmD3PLRsu3TCrSlBeyr8AikoHOEFwr9i6a5VkmONgdHF31dgZGpn4MpQ08SOE9pw-8z4muyOd7CQadysOH7mLcLwkJQf9aLnv9pWd5mFAaRfAdR-DnMlFIIKmp65UbC6mHEVx9R_uAEclJJxSNYiVJPsjBUP" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="763" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhtXDhWOi9EuWfAksKGe7jgMCtsKSjpkmD3PLRsu3TCrSlBeyr8AikoHOEFwr9i6a5VkmONgdHF31dgZGpn4MpQ08SOE9pw-8z4muyOd7CQadysOH7mLcLwkJQf9aLnv9pWd5mFAaRfAdR-DnMlFIIKmp65UbC6mHEVx9R_uAEclJJxSNYiVJPsjBUP=w572-h763" width="572" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Daniel and I after the performance</div><p></p><p><br /></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570975895223331450.post-91843767507347332282023-05-01T23:54:00.001-07:002023-05-01T23:54:33.385-07:00Autumn Fades<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This painting was mostly invented although I painted it on the spot. As usual, my aim was to capture the mood of the last of Autumn and with it, a certain melancholy. Autumn is my favourite time of year and it's often over far too soon. Ballarat has a long Winter and it often intrudes into the Autumn.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I chose a dark mass of cloud for the background as it symbolises the coming Winter. The colours, orange and green, suggested themselves as colours of this time in the year when Autumn and Winter near each other. I also suggested some falling leaves as there is poetry in the scattered carpets of colour that fallen leaves spread over the land.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiur6WLEDVLciyV-89bRw2lRPEh8ipHiY7MPUs8y2DLARNAlXSRR5ULUSnBtVF0WvqEC6rqAYjA82KY-DiIPX7FZhrAcnR7vJ44EovSL9PARbRHQY0DglF6Ns73vgZLO_LGNGrzjciM6SgPuNZHYzSQhbzVpvopGrEFd1x42z0oz5hla-J617xRqVTE" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="825" data-original-width="821" height="582" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiur6WLEDVLciyV-89bRw2lRPEh8ipHiY7MPUs8y2DLARNAlXSRR5ULUSnBtVF0WvqEC6rqAYjA82KY-DiIPX7FZhrAcnR7vJ44EovSL9PARbRHQY0DglF6Ns73vgZLO_LGNGrzjciM6SgPuNZHYzSQhbzVpvopGrEFd1x42z0oz5hla-J617xRqVTE=w580-h582" width="580" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Autumn Fades</i>, 2023, oil on panel, 40 x 40 cm.</div> <p></p>Shane Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01067702830548998338noreply@blogger.com
